THE NEUTRON-DEFICIENT CHAIN $sup 80$Sr-$sup 80$Rb

Journal Article · · J. Inorg. & Nuclear Chem.
The new neutron-deficient pair Sr/sup 80/--Rb/sup 80/ has been identified from irradiations of Gs/sub 2/O/sub 3/ targets with 133-Mev nitrogen ions. Sr/sup 80/ decays with a half life of 100 plus or minus 6 min to 34 plus or minus 4 sec Rb/sup 80/, a genetic relationship verified by rapid chemical separation procedures. The mass number of Rb/sup 80/ was determined with a time-of-fiight isotope separator. Rb/sup 80/ decays primarily ( approximately 60 per cent) to the ground state of Kr/sup 80/ with emission of a positron spectrum of E/sub max/ 4.1 plus or minus 0.5 Mev, and the 620-kev first excited state of Kr/sup 80/ is populated to the extent of plus or minus 40 per cent. On the basis of its decay properties, the ground state configuration of Rb/ sup 80/ is apparently (1+). The only photon assigned to the decay of Sr/sup 80/ has an energy of 580 kev. (auth)
