INTERPRETATION OF EXPERIMENTAL (n,2n) EXCITATION FUNCTIONS

Journal Article · · Physical Review (U.S.) Superseded in part by Phys. Rev. A, Phys. Rev. B: Solid State, Phys. Rev. C, and Phys. Rev. D
Radiochemically determined (n,2n) excitation functions for Sc/sup 45/, Ti/sup 46/, Ni/sup 58/, Cu/sup 65/, Ge/sup 70/, As/sup 7/ s/sup 5/, Sr/sup 84/, Rb/sup 85/, Rb/sup 87/s Y/sup 89/, Zr/sup 90/, Sn/sup 112/, Cd/sup 116/ Sb/sup 123/ ans U/sup 2/< s3>s/sup 8/ have been interpreted in terms of the statistical model of nuclear reactions. Values of the level density parameter a are obtained and correlated with mass number. A procedure is outlined for predicting the magnitude of any (n,2n) cross section from the nuclear content of the target material. Two level density formulations are studied, and approximations customarily made in calculations of this sort are examined quantitatively. (auth)
