THE OXIDATION OF GRAPHITE SINGLE CRYSTALS

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4842078
The nature of etch pits on the {0001} planes of natural graphite was studied using carbon dioxide and oxygen. Marked differences were observed in the mode of graphite attack by oxygen and carbon dioxide, and the way in which hydrogen pre-treatment modified subsequent oxidation by oxygen. Changes in the reaction mechanism during oxidation were observed by alterations in the shape of the etch pits. (M.C.G.)
