AXIOMATIC DEVELOPMENT OF THE LAWS OF VACUUM ELECTRODYNAMICS

The law of classical vacuum electrodynamics are derived from three postulates relating to interactions among charges. Two of these describe the behavior of a moving test charge in an electrostatic field. Application of relativistic arguments to these two fields the Lorentz force law and Maxwell's equations for unaccelerated charges. The third postulate states that these laws are unaltered if the source charges are accelerated. The experimental basis of this postulate is discussed, and is found to be generally inconclusive.
