THE PION-PION EFFECT ON LOW-ENERGY PION-NUCLEON SCATTERING
The plon-plon resonance contribution to low-energy pionnucleon scattering was obtained in closed form by integrating over the circle that characterizes the pi - pi cut. Its effects on the S-wave amplitude and on the isotopic spinflip contributions of S- and P-wave amplitudes in pi -N scattering were studied. The approach differs from a phenomenological method in that control and understanding of the nature of the singularities included in the calculation are possible. When the isotopic spin-flip S-wave amplitude in pi -N scattering is extrapolated from physical to unphysical values of the square of the total energy, a smooth energy dependence is found in the unphysical region. The pi - pi contributions to S/sub 1/2/ and P/sub 1/2/ states of pi -N are related by a mass reversal. (auth)
