Source material and recommended design equations for estimating the fluid flow and heat (or mass) transfer characteristics of packed beds are presented. Introductory material and design equations are given for the particular case of a fixed bed of uniform packing, in which the packing material is the source of the heat or mass being transferred to a single phase unit.
