THE FORMATION OF ANION VACANCIES IN IMPURITY-ACTIVATED KBr CRYSTALS BY X IRRADIATION (in German)

This paper deals with the role of impurity ions in the x-ray production of anion vacancies at low temperatures. In the first part, the production and thermal stability of anion vacancies in x-irradiated KBr crystals are compared with photochemical processes in crystals containing hydride ions. rt is suggested that the ejection of anions from their lattice sites during x irradiation may result from a process analogous to the optical U-- alpha conversion. In order to test this hypothesis, in the second part the production of alpha and F centers in KCl-doped KBr crystals is investigated at 90 deg K. The initial rate of alpha center formation depends in a characteristic way on the ratio of the halide components in the mixed crystals. The rate of F center production, however, is not influenced appreciably by the presence of Cl ions. This effect is interpreted in terms of the preceding consideration. Some observations on the positions of alpha and beta absorption peaks in mixed crystals are appended. (auth)
