On the high energy behaviour of the pion — Nucleon elastic scattering amplitude

The kinematics of ( pi , N) elastic scattering is treated in the quasiclassical approximation. It is shown that if a quasiclassical limit exists, then spin-effects become negligible at sufficiently high pion energies, independently of other details of the interaction. An asymptotic representation of a function defined by means of a Hilbert transform is given. The latter is used to derive the asymptotics of the ( pi , N) forward scattering amplitude. The possibility of testing the results experimentally is discussed.
