DISCUSSION: INSTITUTE OF METALS DIVISION. A STUDY OF THE Ti-Cu-Zr SYSTEM AND THE STRUCTURE OF Ti$sub 2$Cu

A Cu--Ti alloy with the composition Ti-33.3 at.% Cu was examined by neutron diffraction. The oxygen content was found by chemical analysis to be 0.06 at.%. Calculated intensities, made on the basis of the same number of atoms scattering, show that all the calculated face centered tetragonal cell lines are very weak because of near null-matrix composition and do not agree with I/sub obs/ . However, agreement between I/sub calc/I/sub obs/ for the large cell is believed to be good evidence for the large body centered tetragonal cell. Also, from metallographic evidence, no basis exists for a second phase. (P.C.H.)
