Some remarks about the validity of the Rosenbluth formula

The Rosenbluth formula for proton-electron interactions, relating the electric and magnetic form factors GE and GM respectively, the electron scattering angle ( THETA ), and the electron recoil momentum (q), is studied. It is shown that the Rosenbluth factor R is linear with tan2 THETA /2 for fixed G's and q, and that the slope (S) of this line has an upper limit, which is achieved for GE= 0. It is found that for q > about 30 fermi-1 and THETA between about 90 and 145 deg , the experimental data require a value of S that is larger than the calculated upper limit. In this angle and recoil-momentum range, then, the Rosenbluth formula breaks down.
