Sterilization of the Codling Moth by Gamma-Irradiation
Studies were made to determine the feasibility of the sterile male technique as a means of eradicating the codling moth. When male pupae within 1 day of adult emergence and 12- to 24-hr old male moths were exposed to 40,000 rad gamma rays, dominant lethals were induced in --99% of the sperm without undesirable side effects. The female was more susceptible to gamma irradiation than the male. Sperms from irradiated males competed rather poorly with those from normal males, but tests indicate that irradiation of a major fraction of the population may be a promising method for control of the codling moth.
