DIRECTIONAL CORRELATION OF GAMMA TRANSITIONS IN PROMETHIUM-147

The angular correlations of five different gamma-ray cascades, involving the states of Pm/sup 147/, excited in the decay of Nd/sup 147/, have been studied. The observed correlation functions for the various Lascades are as follows: W(/ sub 599/ theta /sub 91/) W(/sub 442/ theta /sub 400/) = 1 + (0.065 = O.O2O)P/sub 2/(cos theta ) - (0. (cos theta ); W(/sub 199/ theta /sub 400/4OO) = 1 - (0.054l = 0.020)P/sub 2/ (cos theta ) + (0.043 = 0.025)P/sub 4/(cos theta ); W(/sub 199/ theta /sub 491/) = 1 + (0.095 = 0.028) P/sub 2/(cos theta ) + P/sub 2/(cos theta ) - (0.001 + 0.025)P/sub 4/(cos theta ). The analysis of the above correlation functions with the ground-state spin of Pm/sup 147/ as 7/2, and the consideration of the log ft values for the beta e the spin values tates as 5/2 and Ambler et al. on nuclear alignment experiments have been reanalyzed. The results are consistent with the above spin assignment of 5/2 for both the 91- and 533-kev levels. (auth)
