PERIPHERAL COLLISIONS AND THE (3/2 3/2) RESONANCE IN THE REACTION p + p $Yields$ n + p + $pi$$sup +$ AT 970 MEV

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev. Letters
A model for the p + p yields n + p + pi /sup +/ reaction at 970 Mev is considered, in which the neutron acts as "spectator" and the proton and pion interact in a T = 3/2 state. Peripheral collisions, in which one nucleon interacts with a virtual pion in the field of the other nucleon, have a large cross section in this model. For 1170 observed events, the p- pi /sup +/ Q- values and differential cross sections are found as functions of the neutron energy and compared with the model's predictions. The results are used to investigate the p- pi /sup +/ scattering cross sections. (T.F.H.)
