The Department of Defense (DoD) has had a long history of working with the local public during environmental restoration. Some of the history has been good; some has not been so good. One of the success stories has been the use of the Restoration Advisory Board (RAB). The RAB serves as a forum through which local communities, military installations, and regulatory agencies can work together in a partnership that encourages discussion and exchange of information. The RAB also serves as a focal point for media information that needs to be disseminated to the local community. Since the RAB is composed of people from several different organizations and technical backgrounds, it also serves as a sounding board for presentations of difficult technical concepts that need to be understood by the local population. Industry can learn from the DoD RAB by developing an organization that can educate the public about highly technical issues. With local community leader involvement with the RAB, trust and credibility can evolve where an adversarial relationship once was.
