The scintillation pulse height was investigated as a function of temperature for anthracene over the temperature range -269 to 20 deg C and for CsI(Tl) over the range --130 to 20 deg C, using polonium alpha particles (5.3 Mev) as a source of excitation. The specimens were kept small (16 mm dia and 1 mm thick) in order to minimize effects due to the temperature difference between different parts of the specimen. Results of the response to the alpha particles were: the pulse height of anthracene varies linearly with temperature and the temperature coefficient is --0.61 plus or minus 0.04; the temperature coefficient in CsI(Tl) is a nonlinear function of temperature. The pulse-height distributions obtained at various temperatures show that the resolution of the alpha-particle peak in both samples increased as the temperature decreased. (N.W.R.)
