CONSUMABLE-ELECTRODE ARC-MELTING OF URANIUM
Technical Report

A small-scale, arc-melting feasibility study was completed. Two-inch- diameter electrodes were prepared from both ingot and dingot uranium. These electrodes were then arc-melted under vacuum into 4-inch-diameter ingots. Some of these ingots were re-formed into electrodes and arc-melted a second time. Procedures for the arc melting of uranium were estublished, and the effects of the process on impurities in uranium were determined. Metallographic studies showed that the inclusions were finely divided and evenly distributed. Chemical analyses indicated that the concentrations of a number of the impurities in uranium are reduced by arc melting. (auth)
