S>Model experiments were made with artificial Sr/sup 90/ fallout in order to study its uptake, distribution, and radiobiological effect in a plant (Arabidopsis thaliana L.) over several generations. The plants were raised in pot experiments under defined conditions. The Sr/sup 90/ was applied as a solution through special jets in the form of fine precipitation. For the most part it was taken up directly into the plant via the leaves. Activity distribution in the soil corresponded approximately to an exponential decrease; a subsequent inactive spraying led to a levellng off in the upper soil layers. With uptake through the root, the Sr/Ca ratio in the plant corresponded to that of the top soil layer; with uptake through the surface of the leaves, it corresponded to that in the applied fall-out solution. The uptake of Sr/sup 90/ in the plant did not increase in proportion to the Sr/sup 90/ concentration in the fall-out. The selective enrichmeitt of Sr in the plant material was in no case great enough to provide effective decontamination of the soil through plant growth. (auth)
