THE REACTION OF CERIUM WITH HYPOCHLORITE COMPOUNDS (in Russian)

Since oxidation of Ce(III) to Ce(IV) is important in separating Ce from rare earths, the mechanism of the reaction of CeCl/sub 3 with NaOCl was followed by potentiometric titration. The changes in pH as a function of the mole ratio of NaOCl to CeCl/sub 3/, the active chlorine in the equilibrium solution and the content of cerium in the precipitate were all determined and explained. Sodium hypochlorite reacts with CeCl/sub 3/ in alltaline solution as follows: 2Ce/sup 3+/ + OCl/sup -/ + 6OH/sup -/ + H/sub 2/O/ = 2Ce(OH)sub 4/ + Cl/sub -/. The ratio of OH/sup -/ to OCl/sup -/ in (l) is 6 to l. The reaction of cerous chloride with pure sodium hypochlorite can be described by the following equations: / + 2H/sup +/ = 2Ce/sup 4+/ + C1/sup - + H/sub 2/O, 2Ce/sup 4+/ + 8H/sub 2/O = 2Ce(OH)/sub 4/ + 8H+ and 6H/sup +/ + 6OCl/sup -/ = 6HOCl. The over-all equation is: 2Ce/sup 3+/ + 7OCl/sup -/ + 7H/sub 2/O = 2Ce(OH)/sub 4/ + 6HOCl + Cl/sup -/. In precipitating cerium, 3.5 moles of NaOCl are required per mole of cerium, and 3.0 moles of HOCl are generated. (TTT)
