PROTECTIVE CLOTHING AND COMBAT EFFECTIVENESS. Textile, Clothing and Footwear Division, Clothing Branch Report No. 20

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4834206

An objective and largely quantitative method is described for comparing the combat effectiveness of soldiers as a function of the clothing and personal equipment provided them. Both the weapons' protection and the adverse physiological effects resulting from protective clothing are analyzed in relation to both nuclear weapon environment and natural environment. The proposed method requires specific data on lethal areas of nuclear weapons used against soldiers with varying degrees of clothing protection, on tolerance times as a function of activity in various clothing ensembles, and on the frequency and duration of military tasks. A specific conclusion is that thermal protection is less effective for front-line troops than for rearechelon troops. (auth)
