PURIFICATION OF HAFNIUM TETRACHLORIDE BY ALKALI-CHLORIDE FUSION

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4834137

The investigation of methods for purification of hafnium tetrachloride was undertaken to aid in producing a higher purity hafnium metal than is currently produced by the Kroll process. The quantities of metallic impurities in the metal were decreased by contact with molten alkali-metal chloride salts. During purification ~3O% of the initial hafnium tetrachloride was trapped with the fused salt. Two methods of reclaiming the hafnium were investigated: precipitation of hafnium hydroxide, and precipitation of the oxychloride. (auth)
