Problems inherent to general dielectric strength measurements are described and a guide in establishing methods for pulse dielectric strength measurements is presented. The shape of the test electrodes is investigated from a theoretical viewpoint, and the actual test electrode shape is evaluated. The detailed description of the laboratory techniques used in making accurate high- voltage pulse measurements is given in addition to a description of the high- voltage pulse generator. The results of some preliminary tests of the pulse dielectric strength of several types of coaxial cable are given to illustrate how the pulse generator can be used and how such tests are performed.
