APPLICATIONS OF ULTRASONIC ENERGY. Task 1. ULTRASONIC CHEMICAL PROCESSING. Task 2. ULTRASONIC METAL AND CERAMIC POWDER PROCESSING. Task 3. ULTRASONIC INSTRUMENTATION. Progress Report No. 22, Covering Period from June 1, 1960 to July 31, 1960

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4833924
In chemical processing, ultrasonic activation of U/sub 3/O/sub 8/ in molten Mg-- Zn is reported in which greater than 99% reduction was obtained in 2 hr. Ultrasonic dissolution of high-fired 96% ThO/sub 2/- UO/sub 2/ fuel pellets in HNO/sub 3/ resulted in complete residue-free solution with a 250% increase in rate. Nionel and titanium are suitable acoustic couplers for this system. Direct ultrasonic activation of 1/4-in.-thick intact U--graphite fuel-plate specimens for 18 hr resulted in 99.6% total dissolved uranium in contrast to 92.2% for nonultrasonic leaching for 20 hr. In ultrasonic metal and ceramic- powder processing, reduction of the extrusion load for aluraina formulations from 7000 to 1200 psig by combined ultrasonic activation of the die and container is reported. Ultrasonic slip casting increased the sintered densities of ceramic formulations by as much as 14%. Plate type simulated fuel elements were successfully recovered from porous molds after slip casting under ultrasonic activation. In ultrasonic instrumentation, couplers with improved sensitivity were assembled, and acoustic attenuation and impedance measurements are in progress. (For preceding period see NYO-2575.) (J.R.D.)
