The exchange of deuterium with propane, n-pentane and n-hexane was followed using a mass-spectrometric technique on evaporated films of palladium and the reaction with n-hexane was also studied on rhodium films. The initial distributions of products provided evdence that an alpha beta gamma - triadsorbed intermediate played a part in the mechanisms, in addition to the monoadsorbed and alpha iabsorbed alkanes already known to be involved in the exchange reactions of hydrocarbons. Alternative mechanisms of exchange operated on rhodium including the direct formation of diadsorbed-hcxane. Above l00 deg on palladium, or at 0 deg or above on rhodium, the hydrocarbons underwent further dissociation to form strongly adsorbed species which poisoned the exchange reactions. Some of these species could be reversibly hydrogenated but others could only be removed by hydrogenolysis to methane. The effect of oxygen or diethyl ether, as poisons for the exchange of hexane and deuterium, was examined on both metals and interpreted. (auth)
