THE PURIFICATION OF EUROPIUM AND SAMARIUM (in German)

Journal Article · · changed to MTLLA
OSTI ID:4833655
The results of research programs have shown that the elements europium and samarium can be prepared with a high degree of purity by reducing their oxides with La and Zr as reduction media. Sm and Eu oxides can also be reduced with Ce and Al; these reduction materials develop however at the working temperature a considerable vapor pressure which accelerates their tendency to vaporize together with Sm and Eu. The reduction process carried out with Ce in the largest plant deserves, from the production engineering viewpoint, considerable attention. The purest Sm cannot be obtained by these methods. The contamination was traced back to the relatively impure initial product (Sm/sub 2/ O/sub 3/). At a reduction temperature of only 900 deg C it is possible to prepare large amounts of the purest Eu. The method for the reduction of Sm/sub 2/ O/sub 3/ with ZrO/sub 2/ is industrially feasible. (tr-auth)
