SOLAR PROTONS FROM THE FLARE OF JULY 10, 1959

Journal Article · · Arkiv Geofysik
OSTI ID:4833615
From a series of balloon flights launched from College, Alaska in July l959, observations of the radiation from the solar flare of July 10, 1959 were obtained. The proton component of the radiation, largely responsible for the polar cap absorption at that time, had a steep energy spectrum. In addition, it was accompanied by a strong gamma ray component, penetrating deep into the atmosphere. Possible origins of the gamma radiation are discussed. (auth)
