The one-pion-exchange and two-pion-exchange parts of tlte S matrix are calculated for nucleon interactions using field theory. They are decomposed into partial wave amplitudes, and the phase shifts are calculated. Calculations and experimental results for proton interactions at 310 Mev are compared, and serious discrepancies appear. This suggests the importance of meson( pi ) interaction effects. (L.N.N)
