The discussion is a simplification of an account reported in 1957. The history and development of the study of magnetohydrodynamics is given from five different directions. The domain of action of magnetohydrodynamics, which includes temperature and ionized gas, is defined, and the five regions, scalar, tensor, magnetic, electromagnetic, and electric, are defined and discussed.
