A BETA-BETA COINCIDENCE SPECTROMETER OF THE INTERMEDIATE IMAGE FOCUSING TYPE

Journal Article · · Arkiv Fysik

A short review of earlier conversion line coincidence spectrometers is given. In the new beta-beta coincidence spectrometer the energy selection is made by means of two iron-yoked intermediate image spectrometers of a new type. These spectrometers permit the source and the detectors to be placed outside the iron yokes in regions where the magnetic field is practically zero, thus making the mutual influence of the spectrometers negligible. The design and the focusing experiments are treated in detail. Typical values for the transmission and the resolution are presented. For coincidence measurements two automatic gain control amplifiers and a fast coincidence unit are used. The spectrometers are also run in tandem, thus one of the detectors is exchanged for a sample, whereupon the electrons traversed both of the spectrometers. In this way it seems possible that the resolution can be increased by a factor of two. (auth)
