THE ORIGIN OF RING CURRENTS IN THE REGION OF THE VAN ALLEN RADIATION BELT (in German)

The measurement of the earth's magnetic field in the region of the outer van Allen radiation belt at a geocentric distance of betveen 20000 and 50000 km shows two distinct field anomalies which are supposed to be caused by ring currents. The interpretation of such currents as a consequence of particle movements on circular orbits in the geomagnetic equatorial plane proves to be untenable. Complete statistics of the particle orbits in the radiation belt explains the supposed ring currents as diamagnetic effects of the belt. A satisfactory agreement between the theoretical and the observed values is obtained with the aid of a simple model. (auth)
