THE SOLID-STATE CONSTITUTION OF HIGH-URANIUM ALLOYS OF THE URANIUM- ZIRCONIUM-SILICON SYSTEM

Journal Article · · Trans. Am. Soc. Metals

An investigation of high-uranium alloys of the uraniumzirconium -silicon system was conducted. Thermal analysis, metallography, and x-ray diffraction were used to construct isothermal ternary sections at temperatures from 550 to 950 deg C. No new ternary phase was encountered; however, extensive solution of zirconium in U3Si/ gives (U,Zr)/sub 3/Si/sub 2/. Otherwise the solubility of zirconium in uranium-silicon alloys is less than 2 at.%. Similarly the solubility of silicon in uranium-zirconium alloys is below 2 at.%. The addition of silicon to uranium-zirconium alloys is accompanied by the formation of Zr/Si which alters the alloy constitution by removing zirconium from solution. Below 930 deg C, uranium-silicon-rich alloys with small amounts of zirconium contain the suitable allotropic form of uranium plus Zr/sub 3/Si/sub 3/ and U/sub 3/Si. The region (U,Zr)/sub 3/Si/sub 2/ plus U/sub 3/Si plus Zrsub/ 5/Si/sub 3/ is also found. If larger amounts of silicon are present, the region (U,Zr)/sub 3/Si/sub 2/ plus U/sub 3/Si is stable. (auth)
