MOUND LABORATORY MONTHLY PROGRESS REPORT ON CHEMISTRY FOR JULY 1961

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4832963
Plastics Research. Izod impact strength, density, and volatiles content determinations were made on Dacronfilled diallyl phthalate molds. The characteristics of five new adhesive formulations were studied. Radioelements. Progress is reported on the development of a method for determining the coincidence correction in proportional counters. The status of the protactinium recovery project is reported. Isotope Separation and Purification. Development of processes for purifying Xe and C isotopens is discussed. Reactor Fuels and Materials Development. The interfacial tension of benzene and water as measured by the falling-drop method was found to increase with dencreasing capillary size to approach the accepted value of 34 dynes/cm. Calibration of a high-temperature calorimeter for studying reactor fuel materials is discussed. The operating characteristics of an oscillating cup viscosimeter were studied. Phase studies of the Au--Pu binary system revealed only one compound, AuPu. The space group and unit cell for CeCu/sub 5/ were determined and found to be close to those of CeCu/sub 4/. Room-temperature water leach tests were conducted on two glass compositions containing 10 wt% PuO/sub 2/, and the results indicate the glasses to be quite stable. (D.L.C.)
