A method is given for the rapid dissolution of PuO/sub 2/ in HNO/sub 3/ without the use of fluoride ions or large amounts of oxidizing agents. Then method comprises the addition of cerium in catalytic amounts of 0.001 to 0.02 M to the dissolving mixture and carrying out the dissolution at - 115 deg C or the b.p. of concentrated HNO/sub 3/. The cerium may be in either the cerous or ceric state. (D.L.C.)
