A bituminous composition suitable for use as neutron shielding material in reactors comprises a bitumen having a hydrogen content of at least 10 wt% and blended with a bitumen-soluble boron compound to give a final boron content of 1 to 5%. Suitable boron compounds include various organic esters of boric acid, such as alkylene glycol diborates and alkyl borates. Boron trifluoride, which reacts with bitumen to form a complex, may also be used. A gamma shield should be provided for this neutron shielding composition. (D.L.C.)
