The addition of 0.5 to 6.0 wt% of a rare earth metal to Cr gives alloys with superior oxidation resistance in air at >2000 deg F and which are not contaminated with nitrogen. The rare earth metal may be one of the group Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, and Lu. Buttons of each alloy were heated in air at 2300 deg F for 100 hr and their weight gains and nitrogen absorptions compared with those for Cr under identical conditions. (D.L.C.)
