The rates of diffusion of carbon-14 in uranium monocarbide are described by the equation, D/sub c/ = 0.02 exp The rates of diffusion of uranium-235 in uranium monocarbide are described by the equation, D/sub u/ = 0.00l3 exp (-64,000/ RT), over the temperature range, 1600 to 2l00 deg C. Attempts to determine rates of interdiffusion in the uranium carbides formed between liquid uranium and graphite were frustrated by lack of a suitable analytical technique. The rates of growth of the monocarbide layer formed are described by the rate-process equation, KD = X/sup 2/t = 16.6 exp (--71,300/RT), over the temperature range, l200 to 2000 deg C. (auth)
