SIMPLE APPROXIMATE FORMULA FOR GAMMA STREAMING THROUGH NARROW AIR FILLED OFFSET PENETRATIONS THROUGH REACTOR SHIELDS.

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4831637
In a homogeneous liquid fuel reactor the circulating fluid is a high gamma source. This implies that many shields derive their dimensions from the attenuation of gamma radiation instead of from neutron flux attenuation. In this case, the gamma-streaming through penetrations may play an important part. Once this streaming is known the average exposure rate behind a shield with a number of penetrations can be calculated as well as peak ratios. A simple approximate formula, which gives conservative resutls, is derived for penetrations with n bends. Results are presented. (5 refs.) (auth)
