Angular dependence of polarization in p-p elastic scattering at 970 MeV
The angular dependence of polarization in p-p elastic scattering was measured at 970 Mev. Results agree qualitatively with measurements at 0.635 and 1.7 Bev and indicate that a Gammel-Thaler type spin-orbit potential is unsatisfactory at these energies. A least squares fit to the data gave sigma ( theta ) E( theta ) = sin theta cos theta {(0.70 plus or minus 0.04) P/sub o/ (cos theta ) + (1.56 plus or minus 0.12) P2(cos theta ) + (0.45 plus or minus 0.14) P4(cos theta )} mb/sr, where sigma ( theta ) and E( theta ) are the unpolarized differential cross section and the measured asymmetry as functions of theta (c.m), respectively. The maximum observed polariza tion in p-p scattering is close to 40% at 48 deg (cms).
