THE EFFECT OF IONIZING RADIATION UPON HEREDITY AND VITAL ACTIVITY OF SOME SORTS OF WHEAT AND RYE (in Russian)

Hereditary changes occur as a rule in the course of metabolism, of development of the living body, and in the course of vital activity of plants cultivated under proper conditions both within the year of irradiation and in subsequent generations, but not immediately after irradiation. Seeds which have not passed the dormancy period are more resistant to high irradiation doses. This indicates the significance of metaboIic proces ses in irradiation. Dormant seeds of different sorts of wheat and rye showed greater resistance to high radiation doses (30,000 r or more in wheat and 20,000 r or more in rye) than those released from dormancy. Hence, the mode of action of ionizing radiatlon depends on the physiological state of the seeds, (auth)
