WAVE PROPAGATION IN A PARTIALLY IONIZED MEDIUM (in French)

Journal Article · · Journal de Physique et le Radium (France) Changed to J. Phys. (Orsay, Fr.)
OSTI ID:4830969
The propagation and damping of low-frequency waves are studied in an infinite uniform, partially ionized medium in a longitudinal magnetic field. Two longitudinal modes and two transversal uncoupled modes are obtained. One of the transversal modes corresponds to the acoustic wave, and the other is rapidly damped. The two transversal modes have speeqs which are very close to the speed of Alfven waves (obtained in the case of a fully ionized medium). These waves are damped by collision between particles and the cogfficient is proportional to the square of the frequency. (auth)
