INDETERMINATE CHARACTER OF THE REDUCTION OF THE WAVE PACKET IN QUANTUM THEORY

Journal Article · · Physical Review (U.S.) Superseded in part by Phys. Rev. A, Phys. Rev. B: Solid State, Phys. Rev. C, and Phys. Rev. D
ABS>Von Neumann's proof of the ineffectiveness of the use of hidden variables to account for the reduction of the wave packet is analyzed. A possible weakness of the argument is found in the manner in which the probabilistic interpretation of quantum theory is employed. An alternative proof is presented which avoids this aspect of quantum theory. The conclusion is drawn that there is no theory consistent with quantum mechanics which can account for the occurrence of events in nature. (auth)
