INVESTIGATION OF THE TECHNICAL FEASIBILITY OF COLD EXTRUSION FOR ZIRCALOY-2 TUBING PRODUCTION. Quarterly Technical Progress Report, January-March 1961

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4830249

Investigations are being made to establish the feasibility of using cold extrusion to produce zircaloy-2 tubular products. Resuits of 105 bar-extrusion tests are presented. The optimum extrusion temperature appeared to be 300 deg C, based on lubricant condition and extrusion pressure. Samples in 145 piercing tests were reduced up to 80%. In 46 tube-extrusion tests, reduction to 80% and wall thicknesses to 0.044 in. were achieved. Results of tensile tests, metallographic examination, preferred-orientation studies, and corrosion testing are discussed. (M.C.G.)
