Scattering of a particle by an identical particle in a bound state (for instance, scattering of an electron by a hydrogen atom) is treated. The treatment is based on the use of a Schroedinger equation for a two-component wave function, with a Hamiltonian that is a 2 x 2 matrix. One and only one linear combination of the components of the wave function is a solution of the ordinary Schroedinger equation for two identical particles in a field of force and interacting with each other. Such a linear combination has the symmetry required by the Pauli principle. (auth)
