THE TERNARY SYSTEM CADMIUM-BISMUTH-INDIUM

Journal Article · · Trans. Am. Soc. Metals
OSTI ID:4829576
The cadmium--bismuth-indium ternary system was investigated by thermal analysis, microscopmc, and x-ray nmethods. Cadmiunn dominates the diagram occupying 75% of the compositmonal area of primary crystallization. ln four other regions, bismuth, alpha (indium-ricb phase), beta (In/sub 2/Bi), and gamma (lnBi), respectively, are the primary phases. A reaction occurs in the bismuth- rich portion, and two ternary eutectics occur in the system. One, consisting of cadmmum, gamma, and beta, melts at 77.5 deg C; and the other, containing cadmium, beta, and alpha, melts at 61.5 deg C. The former is at 10% Cd, 48.5% Bi, and 41.5% ln; the latter has a composition of 7.5% Cd, 30.83% Bi, and 61.77% In. (auth)
