PROVOCATION OF A RADIATION CATARACT BY TRAUMATIZING AN IRRADIATED EYE LENS (in Russian)

Young frogs (Rana tempotaria) and white mice were subjected to x-ray doses varying from 350 to 2000 r. An incision was made in the right eye to a depth of one-haif of the diameter of the lens. The left eye was the control. With a dose of 1000 r, clouding of the lens was noted in 3 to 4 days after the operation, and formation of a milky mass was observed in two weeks. With 2000 r, total clouding of the lens was observed in one to two days after the operation. With a dose of 350 r, spots began to appear 14 to 16 days after the operation. The lens was completely clouded in 18 days. The left eye remained completely normal for 20 days after the incision in all tlte experiments. With the control, unirradiated animals, a temporary cloudiness was noted near the incision, but this cloudiness vanished rapidly. These experiments indicate that there is some risk to man from an eye operation, if the person has previously been exposed to a relatively high level of ionizing radiation. The accumulation of many small doses may also be harmful. (TTT)
