The carbon-12 scale of atomic masses

· Journal of Chemical Education
The adoption of a unified atomic weight scale based on the use of C12 as the reference mass scale is discussed. Topics covered include the concept of atomic weight, the rise and coexistence of two scales, proposals for unification of the two scales, and adoption and use of C12 unified scale. A comparison is presented of the atomic and molecular weights of some nuclides and substances in terms of the chemical, physical, and C12 scales in order to show what changes in molecular properties can be expected.
