HEAVY WATER MODERATED POWER REACTORS. Progress Report, August 1961

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4829062

At the end of August 1961, construction of the HWCTR was about 85% complete. Satisfactory performance was exhibited by two thin-walled tubes of unalloyed uranium metal during a Savannah River irradiation; the maximum exposure of these tubes essentially matched the highest level yet achieved by any of the fuel elements developed in the power reactor program to date. Fabrication of compacted uranium oxide tubes in Zircaloy sheaths for irradiation in the VBWR and at Savannah River neared completion. Further data were obtained on the bucklings of clusters of 0.5-inch-diameter rods of natural uranium oxide in D/sub 2/O moderator. (auth)
