$gamma$-RADIOLYSIS OF HEXANE IN THE PRESENCE OF SMALL ADMIXTURES OF BENZENE

The effect of small amounts of benzene on the process and the basic products of the gamma radiolysis of hexane in a liquid phase at 20 deg C was studied. Since extremely small amounts of benzene infiuence the gamma radiolysis of hexane, special attention was paid to the purity of the initial hydrocarbons. The following results were obtained. During the radiolysis of hexane in the presence of 10/sup -4/ to 10/sup -1/ mole/ liter of benzene the yield of the various products of radiolysis formed by different mechanisms decreases, as compared with pure hexane, with an increase of benzene concentration to 5.10/sup 03/ mole/liter. No further decrease was observed with an increase of benzene concentration up to 10/sup -1/ mole/liter. The independence of inhibition from the chemical reaction of formation of different radiolysis products may be explained by the fact that the inhibitor takes part of the excitation energy from electron levels of the excited molecules or ions, before any chemical reaction occurs. The transfer of excitation energy from the molecule of irradiated hydrocarbon to the molecule of the inhibitor in the radiolysis of n-hexane with additions of benzene satisfies the relationship corresponding to the direct electromagnetic transfer of energy.
