PROCESS FOR SEPARATING IONS BY ION EXCHANGE

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4828900
A process is outlined for separating rare earths and yttrium from each other by pseudocountercurrent ion exchange. The process comprises nearly saturating (80 to 95% of capacity) a cation exchange resin bed with the rare earth mixture, eluting the resin with a solution of a complexing agent, and collecting separately successive fractions. The resin bed is preferably a sulfonated polystyrene-divinylbenzene copolymer with 4% crosslinkage and has a height of 3 to 4 ft for a --100 + 200 mesh resin or 8 to 12 ft for a-50 + 100 mesh resin. The complexing agent may be ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid or a salt thereof. Several examples of the process are given. (D.L.C.)
