THE SYSTEM CaO-MgO-ZrO$sub 2$-SiO$sub 2$
The system CaO--MgO-- ZrO/sub 2/--SiO/sub 2/ was studied with stress on its unexplored ternary subsystem CaO- ZrO/sub 2/-SiO/sub 2/, for the purpose of investigating the possibility of utilizing the quaternary system in the production of refractories. The results obtained and available data on the other three ternary subsystems--- CaO- MgO-- ZrO/sub 2/, CaO--MgO -SiO/sub 2/, and MgO - - ZrO/sub 2/ -- SiO/sub 2/ --- showed that the quaternary system contains at 1600 deg C rather considerable concentration fields suitable for the production of refractories. These fields drop sharply with an increase of the temperature to 2000 deg C, which reveals the negative effect of SiO/sub 2/. Only binary combinations of CaO, MgO, and ZrO/sub 2/ or ternary combinations containing less than 5% of the third oxide are suitable for the production of refractories for performance at 2000 deg C.
