Observations are reported on the dendritic growth of graphite from Ni--C melts. Ni shot was melted in graphite crucibles, held at 1450 deg C to saturate the melt, and cooled at a rate of 15 deg C/min. Large discontinuous plates of primary graphite were observed, separated from eutectic graphite by the alpha phase. Large growth steps averaging 0.01 mm were observed in the crystal interior, while at the surface smaller steps of 0.001 mm height were measured. No evidence was found for screw dislocations, but systems of concentric circular steps or hexagonal steps were observed. It is concluded that the dendritic graphlte grows by repeated nucleation of steps which advance as a series of macro- steps into the liquid. (D.L.C.)
